10,000 Lewis World Champ 07 T-shirts for Sale

It’s common for the marketing people to produce World Champion T-shirts before the World Championship is decided. While we can’t confirm it, it’s almost certain there are some “Lewis Hamilton – Formula One World Champion 2007″ T-shirts floating around somewhere (probably left in Brazil)… ;)

Who would have guessed Lewis wouldn’t take the crown in Brazil? He had a good grid position. He only needed 7th place. The world (well, Britain) was on his side. Yet he couldn’t rewrite the history books.

Or could he? McLaren are protesting the fact that the BMW and Williams cars that finished ahead of Lewis didn’t get penalised for their fuel being out of regulation temperature. So maybe those T-shirts might be worth some coin after all? For now, we’ll assume the result stands as we review the race itself…

Kimi Raikkonen – Sweet justice for the man who tried so hard at McLaren. The man who we thought would be unstoppable after the first race of the season. The man who won 6 races – a few more than any other driver this year. The man who had mechanical failures while his opponents (McLaren) had 100% reliability – yet he still managed to get more points. The man who hasn’t had to resort to off-track politics to try to get an advantage. The man who simply, deserved it the most. Well done Kimi, well done.

Lewis Hamilton – We’ll do a championship summary post later on, but as far as the Brazilian Grand Prix is concerned Lewis cracked under the pressure for the 2nd race running. To be fair his gearbox problem had more to do with the final result (update: as Paula points out below, the latest news is that Lewis accidentally hit a starting button which caused the “problem”. Thanks Paula! :) ), but the question remains – why the wild driving at the start of the race? It’s great that he wants to win each and every race, but give me a championship with 4 race wins instead of 5 wins any day…

Fernando Alonso – Great start, but that’s it. For whatever reason there have been so many races this season where we haven’t seen the magic he showed at Renault. I can’t help but think if it was Lewis in 3rd he would have been able to stay closer to the Ferraris…

Felipe Massa – Super job from the Brazilian driver. Shame he wasn’t allowed to win his home Grand Prix, or was he? Kimi sure did put in some quick laps before his last pit stop and he’s jumped Massa like this in the past. Either way, I’m sure Felipe could have had a different result if the World Championship wasn’t so close. Maybe Kimi will return the favour next year? Although something tells me Kimi will be even quicker next year…

Nico Rosberg – Yet another fantastic performance. Really would be good to see him up against Hamilton in a McLaren next year.

BMW – Good to see them back on pace after a few poor rounds earlier. They’ve been the thorn in Fernando Alonso’s side in many races this year and this time they really hurt Lewis Hamilton.

Kazuki Nakajima – Kazuki who? Apart from a very dangerous and scary pit stop, this guy seemed to actually have a little bit of speed at times over the weekend. I wonder where his future lies.. surely not as a full time Williams or Toyota driver next year?

Mark Webber – Good old reliability problems! Man, this guy can’t even buy a break! Another driver who’d be good to see in a McLaren.

  1. The youngster said: “My finger slipped on the steering wheel and I accidentally pressed the button used for the starting sequence.” GEAR BOX PROBLEM??

  2. “give me a championship with 4 race wins instead of 5 wins any day…”

It might not be smart to go for the win, but you can’t say that Kimi shares this attitude, as his shattered suspension at the Nurburgring in 2005 proves. Many prefer to see the drivers go all out to win.

  3. As one of the few Ferrari supporters on this predominantly McLaren site (Yes dScribe, I know you try to be fair to all but you have to admit this is true), I have taken a bit of stick for my support of Ferrari this year. Jason, dScribe, Paula – you’ve all had a dig but where are you now? Where are those sarcastic comments I love to hate so much? Maybe next year you will heed my warnings about the Iceman!

No I am not going to dribble on about how good he is and how perfect Ferrari is (although I have every right!) What I will say is What a season! Still miss Schumi but What a season! Fantastic! I am expecting next year to be even better with the young upcoming talent in the field and the likes of BMW, Red Bull, Williams and (dare I say it) even Honda (I am sure they will be better next year)!

So I will end the F1 season showing as much class as Ferrari and BOTH their drivers have shown this year by saying:

“Sorry to all non-Ferrari supporters, better luck next year!”

KIMI RAIKKONEN – WORLD CHAMPION 2007

  4. Well. It will take a while for all the McLaren supporters to swallow this season.
What do you say?? Folly and errors and mismanagement …. McLarens didn’t deserve anything this year and I am sure that Ferrari will show the stick to them the next year too..
Kimi was awesome… He was above the rest in the final part of the season and the title was well deserved.
Hoping to hear from all the Alonso fans (paula en all….)
Hope you write a few sentences more….
Alonso and Hamilton need to visit some correction facility before 2008 season…

  5. Paula – Thanks for that info. As you can see I updated the post soon after thanks to your input :)

Colin – I’d love to see more importance put on winning. At the moment the rules are all about reliability – 10 points for 1st and 8 points for 2nd – that isn’t much incentive to do a daring move to get in the lead. I much preferred the old old points system where only the top 6 got points – 10 points for winning, 6 points for 2nd – now that’s a big difference! Almost half the points :)

Stephen – Interesting you mention McLaren because I think the site is more pro-Alonso than pro-McLaren. That’s not intentional either. The earlier posts were quite pro-Kimi and anti-Alonso – but all that changed after he got his first championship. He became a changed driver and earned our respect.

Back to McLaren though – I have no doubt they have lost a lot of fans this year with everything from the spy scandal to how they managed their drivers. It’s not only this season either. Think back to Juan Pablo Montoya’s run with the team – is there something wrong internally?

I will admit the site will often appear to take sides on a lot of things and the fans that visit are generally pro-Alonso, pro-Kimi, anti-Schumacher (sorry!), anti-Hamilton (maybe?), anti-Ferrari… but we don’t pick who comes here. I really hope more fans like yourself get on board because we need balance.

Anyway, for the record I was punching the air with joy with Kimi’s win on Sunday :) So once again, well done Kimi – and well done Ferrari. There, I said it hehe ;)

And I TOTALLY agree that next year is going to be even better with all the new talent! :)

Robin Stephen – I think you’ll find a lot of McLaren fans would have been really happy that Kimi finally got what he deserved. There will be some die-hard Alonso and Hamilton fans who would like nothing other than their boys to win, but there’s no doubt that Kimi deserved it more than anyone (even more than Massa if you consider their entire F1 careers and what they’ve been through).

Wow.. such a long reply. Sorry about that but keep the comments coming. Great debate. Great season. Great sport (maybe hehe ;) ).

  6. Just tell me where I can buy the tee-shirt!!
    :)

  7. May be Fernando can’t stay closer to the Ferraris because his car was
worse than the Lewis car????… Equality???? what Equality ?????…. mmmmmmm……….

  8. A McLaren spokeswoman elaborated: “It was due to a default in the gearbox that selected neutral for a period of time.

“It was not as a result of Lewis pressing an incorrect button on his steering wheel,” she added.

McLaren chief executive Martin Whitmarsh explained: “It would appear that the barrels that change gear went out of control – and out of control of the driver – and that’s probably hydraulic.”

    Even Hamilton contradicted the reports.

He told Bild: “That is total rubbish!”

    HUH???? what the …..??(heck)

  9. Paul – You’ll find them at the same place you get the Michael Schumacher World Champion 1998 and 1999 T-shirts ;) Seriously, those were really made in ‘98 but I think they learnt their lesson for ‘99 :)

Hugo – Maybe. I guess we’ll find out if he goes to a different team next year and is quick again :)

Paula – McLaren just keep digging a bigger hole don’t they? It’s a shame because there was so much to like about the team, but I’m starting to see what a lot of their detractors over the years were talking about.. :(

  10. “Hamilton wrongly quoted on gearbox failure” Seems there may be some truth in the fact that it was not Hamiltons’ fault..will we ever know? Is there any news on the “appeal” yet?

  11. I watched the GP in Turkey, I was on holiday, the best day of my life! It was amazing! There was a big screen on the wall of our hotel, I couldn’t understand anything that was said, but it was great! After the race I laughed and cryed… I’m so happy.

It’s weird that people say Kimi doesn’t deserve to be the champion. If a driver with most wins and points doesn’t deserve it, then who does?

I love you Kimi! We’ve been waiting for this for so long! Thank you!

  12. Hello my friends..!!!

ALONSO IS THE BEST..U RE THE BEST !!! BRAVO ALONSO!! OLE ALONSO!!

    U ARE THE CHAMPION !!!

    SEE YA !!

Robert. FERNANDO ALONSSOO FANN CLUB OF UNITED STATES.

  13. A year ago I started to like Fernando. I was in Spain, I watched the last GP there. It must have been the atmosphere. But Kimi is still my number one! He’s always been and always will be.

  14. Sorry for my late response, I have been in the bathroom vomitting for the past week….it sounded like this FFFFEEERRRAAAARRRII

Well if anybody deserved it, it was probably Kimi! He is the only one that manages to run a straightforward race on and off the track. I guess that is the advantage to being a man of so few words, it keeps minimizes the media from blowing it out of context.

I was waiting for Alonso to crack under pressure and here it was Hamilton that lost it. However, I still find it hard to believe that a slip of Lewis’ finger could initiate the engine start sequence. I can’t even delete an email on my computer without being asked “Are you sure?”. I am pretty sure that similiar safeguards must be built into a F1 car. Perhaps a Microsoft-like prompt “You are about to throw away the 2007 Formula One Championship. Are you sure you want to continue?” ;)

  15. Paula – Apparently the journo who broke the story about Lewis accidentally pressing a button heard it from other people talking… but generally in this game where there’s smoke, there’s fire :)

Saara – Totally agree. Kimi deserved the championship more than anyone! :)

Robert – Umm.. isn’t Kimi the champion? ;)

Jason – Hope you’re feeling better! I know what it’s like to be sick like that! And there’s definitely something fishy about Lewis’ gearbox “problem” during the race – someone’s covering up for someone (not necessarily Lewis either).

  16. Well now since Alonso is a free bird I wish he would join “Force India”.. A World Champion Spaniard in an Indian car would be of tremendous boost for F1 in India…
Unlike me who always wanted to be an F1 driver and found that there was no road for me at that time, it surely will bring Indian drivers into the fray . And i bet ya if once Indian drivers start entering in then there will be a major hunt for talents in the South Asian region cause everyone here are used to driving with amazing refluxes and amazing accuracy and judgment on the reckless Indian trafficked roads.
We are already trained for these terrains… (unlike Narain who paid for his drive) …
Here we come F1…Brace yourself for the Indians…

  17. Robin Stephen – Would be interesting to see Alonso at Force India… would he be able to get them into the points a few times even? :)

As for hunting for talent in the South Asian region, I’m not so sure about that… :) Seems like Germany and Finland are the “hot” countries at the moment for driver talent.

  18. Yeeeeehaaaaaa!!!
    What happens in this forum???
I guess some of you are enjoying/waiting for your holidays, some of you but me ’cause I’m in the fucking office working yet, but why there isn’t any comment about last F1 race?
The F1 has come!!! Australian race has finished and there’re lots of things to talk about.
(Do you think I’m bored? Probably yes, I’m counting how many seconds remains to go out. Anyway how about reinaugurating this?)

  19. i love your blog,really nice
